Chiropractic Preventative Care for Chronic Pain

Written By Eastside Chiropractic on July 1, 2017

Chiropractic is a discipline most people are only familiar with on a superficial level. The image is that of a doctor who treats painful conditions by stretching and twisting patients' spines, to varying results. In reality, while chiropractic treatments do often involve manual manipulation, they also include ergonomic training, exercise and even ultrasound or laser therapies.

What Kinds of Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

By far, the most common condition for which patients seek chiropractic treatment is back pain. The majority of research conducted so far focuses on treating chronic back pain using spinal manipulation. However, chiropractors are qualified to treat a wide variety of conditions, including:

• Headaches

• Asthma

• Carpal tunnel syndrome

• Fibromyalgia

• Other musculoskeletal disorders

Most often, chiropractic care does its best at relieving and reducing pain. It is highly preferred to drug therapies due to the fact that it carries no side effects. Drug treatments for chronic pain typically focus on opioid painkillers that can cause addictions and damage liver function when abused.

Other therapies for chronic pain, such as acupuncture, are more hotly contested by the medical community at large. Chiropractic treatments have been shown to produce results in clinical tests.

How Does Spinal Manipulation Work?

One of the most common chiropractic techniques is spinal manipulation, which generally consists of strong, quick pressure on the joint between two vertebrae. The pressure is meant to twist the joint beyond its typical range of motion, releasing a bubble in the spinal fluid and encouraging smooth, uninterrupted fluid flow for the patient.

This is achieved by placing the patient in specific positions and then applying manual pressure to those joints one at a time. The positions keep the pressure from spreading to other vertebrae, focusing it on the two being treated. Patients often feel relief after their first visit, but real improvement begins after a few weeks of regular treatment.
